Single-gender charter schools are having great success, especially with minority boys! Check out BEST academy in MN, Excellence Academy and Eagles Academy in NY city, Brighter Choices in Albany NY, Urban Prep in Chicago and 100 Black Men Charter school in Oakland CA. These schools are excelling far beyond their local community public schools. We propose a K_5, single-gender charter school with separate classes for boys and girls; less distraction, greater focus. Studies show that graduates of single-gender schools go into leadership in greater proportion than graduates of coed schools. Such a school would have the freedom to experiment with innovative methodologies and serve as a learning laboratory for other schools in the community.
