Citizen Police Academy
The purpose of the Waukegan Citizen's Police Academy (WCPA) is to foster goodwill and understanding between the Waukegan Police Department and the residents of Waukegan. The WCPA is a 11-week, once-a-week, 2.5 hour class that is taught by members of the Waukegan Police Department.

The WCPA is an excellent tool at the disposal of both the police department and the citizens it serves. The students gain valuable insight not only into how the Waukegan Police Department functions, but gives them the opportunity to practice our methods hands on. In return, it puts our police officers in contact with the public and gives an opportunity for the police department to gain insight to the needs and expectations of the community.

During the 11-week academy, participants will receive both classroom and hands on training and experience. During this time they will learn about:

Qualifications and qualities of a police officer
How a police officer is selected
How police officers are trained
Patrol functions
Investigation functions
Juvenile law
Criminal Justice System
Firearms qualifications
Traffic Stops, law and DUI
Use of Force / Case Law
Neighborhood Policing Unit
Gangs and Narcotics
Evidence Technicians
